It’s more difficult to determine when something ends. After years of slowly creeping back into the fore, shoegaze’s popularity exploded in 2023 due to a confluence of new fans, new bands, and fresh energy. That's the year I locate as the formal beginning of a new shoegaze era, and it’s safe to say that we’re still living through that same period even as 2025 comes to a close. Some of the revival’s most crucial bands have evolved away from shoegaze proper (Wednesday, Hotline TNT, Greet Death), and many of the new-jack fans who never engaged with the genre beyond Deftones TikToks have predictably dropped out, but if you look at the numbers, the fervor around shoegaze music remains at a fever pitch.

Affable Boston bruisers Haywire spent 2025 playing sweaty, cathartic, extremely fun live shows in every VFW Hall and skate park from sea to shining sea. Within 12 months, they rocked venues in all 50 states, no exaggeration. Their sets, captured and broadcast by whoever was brave enough to hold up cellphones in high stagedive-density areas, only grew bigger and wilder. Along the way, Haywire got really, really good at performing their exceedingly simple basher anthems,. They are a grassroots sensation, a legend in the making. But Haywire's debut full-length Conditioned For Demolition came out last year. Their only 2025 record was Shirts Vs. Skins, a split EP with No Guard. So this is a Chappell Roan 2024 situation. I can't salute Haywire's golden moment on this list, and this list is missing something without them.

The late Heavy Load frontman left an indelible mark on heavy metal, in his native Sweden and beyond, so writing about him after learning he'd died unexpectedly at the age of 69 just made sense. I stand behind that column. It contains the only major interview that Ragne's brother and bandmate, Styrbjörn Wahlquist, has done since Ragne's death. I got a few luminaries of today's Swedish metal underground to talk about what Heavy Load meant to them. A few readers even told me that my column had convinced them to check out Death And Glory and Stronger Than Evil, which was all I could have asked for. By late summer, when I had weighed and decided against a half-dozen other memorial columns, it became clear that the Ragne Wahlquist tribute would be a one-off. Metal legends were dying with such frequency that, if anything, Breaking The Oath needed an obituaries desk.

We've known for seemingly ages now that the world's most popular streaming platform pays artists fractions of pennies, but that rift between artists and the company's head honchos grew exponentially this year after news broke in June that Spotify CEO Daniel Ek had invested nearly $700 million via his own venture capital firm into Helsing, a German company that develops AI military software. (Ek is also the chairman of Helsing.) As if that wasn't enough, in October Spotify also began running ICE recruitment ads for listeners on their free subscription tier, and addressed the backlash by saying that it did not violate their company advertising policies.

The others died years ago. But if you've never listened to Haynes' Out Of The Afternoon, or Ammons' Boss Tenor, or Pepper's Meets The Rhythm Section, it's never too late to catch up.

This is one of the reasons why jazz and metal have so much in common, and so often appeal to the same listeners. Both forms can be totally absurd. Think of the most lurid, squiggly fusion, or the blare of a thoroughly unsubtle big band record; aren't they the equivalent of, say, DragonForce? But metal's awareness of its own absurdity does not translate into ironic distance from what they're doing. And the same is true of jazz. People will play the most ridiculous, over-the-top shit with a totally straight face. Even when a jazz group exhibits a certain amount of wit — think of the Bad Plus in their original incarnation, the version that covered "Smells Like Teen Spirit"; or Mostly Other People Do The Killing, and the way their sleeve designs imitated famous jazz album covers — it's done out of love, not mockery.

Their performance was a spectacle: plumes of fire, a Poppy appearance, rain pelting down on the moshing crowd at the outdoor stage. Supposedly, at least one adolescent was frightened. Knocked Loose are currently the biggest band in all of hardcore, to the point where nobody can agree whether they're a hardcore band or just an arena-metal band whose members are all hardcore kids. They've reached the point where they can stage that Kimmel spectacle, with all the attendant viral silliness, without coming close to compromising the ferocity of their music. That's crazy.

After 11-plus years and 140 columns, we're finally packing it in. "Welcome to the Black Market, a new space at Stereogum dedicated to talking about and listening to heavy music," Michael Nelson wrote in the first Black Market published on February 27, 2013. Well, we talked about it, and we listened to it, although that last part has been under considerable debate over the past seven years. But, similar to how a record will eventually need to stop spinning, the Black Market has exhausted its wax, and we're no stuck groove. This is it, then, real-deal dunzo, because in metal, no one ever reforms for festival-backed nostalgia bucks and legacy-tarnishing diminishing returns. Nope. Never happens. Not even once.

Reflecting on a period marked by long nights in futuristic spaces, I recall taking in more sets indebted to Basic Channel than Orbital over the last 12 months. Sure, there were exceptions, with dubstep, jungle, and progressive house coming back into vogue. For the most part, though, it seems as if the style’s mutual consciousness agreed to cater to moody lounging in 2024. The best releases of the year are overarchingly cerebral and echoing, suited for hermetic subway journeys and bouts of introversion.
